The 1963 hit was inspired by events in Cooke’s life – most notoriously when Cooke and his friends were turned away from a white-only motel in Louisiana.

Jordan chose to sing the song because his ‘Papa’ had told him the story when he was just eight-year-old and he fell in love with the song.
