A new piece of Obi-Wan Kenobi fan art depicts its titular character and a young Leia Organa in the style of the classic comic strip Calvin and Hobbes. Disney+ recently dropped “Part I” and “Part II” of the long-awaited Star Wars project Obi-Wan Kenobi, which reintroduces fans to Ewan McGregor’s “Ben” Kenobi during his time in exile on Tatooine. Picking up ten years after the events of Revenge of the Sith (2005), the series sees the Grand Inquisitor (Rupert Friend)the Third Sister Reva (Moses Ingram), and a team of Inquisitors searching for Obi-Wan and other Jedi who survived Order 66.

Before Obi-Wan Kenobi‘s premiere, it had already been confirmed that the series would include legacy characters in Joel Edgerton’s Uncle Owen, Bonnie Piesse’s Aunt Beru, Hayden Christensen’s Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, and even Grant Feely as a young Luke Skywalker. What was perhaps unexpected is the surprise breakout star Vivien Lyra Blair as a wisecracking young princess Leia Organa driving the plot. In episode 2, Obi-Wan is visited by Bail Organa (Jimmy Smits) After his daughter is captured—which is all part of a play by the Third Sister to draw Obi-Wan out of hiding. Obi-Wan then tracks the kidnappers to Daiyu, where he retrieves the biological daughter of Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala. However, this is not to say Leia makes it easy for him to do so.

Calvin and Hobbes follows the antics of its titular characters, a mischievous six-year-old and a sardonic tiger, respectively. In a way, the pair have a similar dynamic to that of 10-year-old Leia and a broken/faithless Obi-Wan. It’s safe to say that Blair’s performance is more than a Carrie Fisher impression as she captures the character’s plucky, wise, and dryly hilarious spirit—which is a treat for the audiences and the series’ title character, who needed to be reminded of the galaxy’s goodness and given a reason to leave Tatooine.

Despite being a surprise, Obi-Wan Kenobi‘s use of Leia and the subsequent dynamic between her and Obi-Wan makes perfect sense. It explains the pair’s relationship in Episode IV—A New Hope and provided some needed levity to balance out the series’ grim setting/time period. That said, Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Calvin and Hobbes phase may be over as McGregor’s character has saved Leia before learning his former Padawan is still alive as Darth Vader. After Leia returns to Alderaan, “Part III” and onward is poised to focus on Obi-Wan, Vader, and Reva.
